"Masterpieces are not single and solitary births; they are the outcome of many years of thinking in common, of thinking by the body of the people, so that the experience of the mass is behind the single voice." -Virginia Woolf

In no medium is this more evident than film.  A film can be made by a single person with one voice and one set of experiences.  But for a film to be made great, it must speak for many, reflect experiences shared by many, and resonate with many.

Not surprisingly, great films have become a powerful vehicle for change.  With the technology for shooting and watching now affordable and ubiquitous, film is rapidly becoming the most effective means of powerful communication, even from the most censored societies.

"Today, women in Muslim-majority countries still face many legal and cultural impediments to their basic freedoms and civil rights." says Catinca Tabacaru, founder of Women's Voices Now.  "But no group is better equipped to present the issues facing women of the Muslim world to an international audience than the women who live and breathe them each day."

So Women's Voices Now (WVN) is hosting an international festival of films about women living in predominantly Muslim countries and films about Muslim women living in non-Muslim countries.

The festival has two major components.  One will take place in Los Angeles, March 17-19, 2011, with cash prizes of over $35,000 to be awarded.  (To get news related to this event, use the links in the top-right to follow WVN and Benefeast on Facebook and Twitter).

The other component is online, and is happening right now!  Nearly 100 shorts (3 to 30 minutes in duration) have been uploaded already, available to everyone here.

Watch films such as Feminin Masculin, by Sadaf Foroughi (Iran)

And Alka Sadat's  Half Value Life (Afghanistan).

By collecting and promoting films such as these, Women's Voices Now not only helps break down obstacles facing women living in the Muslim world, but also helps break down our own inabilities to understand the nuances of their lives.

To make it all happen (including assissting with the trasportation costs of getting the winners to attend the festival in L.A.), WVN needs to raise $18,000.

Please join WVN (and some guest poets, artists, filmmakers and DJs) at their Winter White Benefit, December 14th in NYC!  To register through Benefeast, click here.  Make sure to wear white!

Benefeast Nonprofit of the Month (November, ’10): Eat So They Can

November, 2010

Spotlight On:

Many nonprofits rely on guilt to garner contributions.  They show you pictures of the harsh realities of parts of the world and imply, "how can you justify living your lifestyle?"

But what if helping people in other parts of the world wasn't just about assuaging guilt; what if it were enjoyable and easy?

As you've probably figured out by now, that's what Benefeast is all about: giving you fun and easy ways to contribute to your favorite nonprofits beyond simply writing a check.

But we certainly didn't invent this concept.  We owe a lot of our inspiration to Eat So They Can, a global fundraising initiative for the GVN Foundation (a 501c3 tax-exempt nonprofit).

The concept of Eat So They Can is simple: Eat So They Can invites people around the world to host a dinner and invite their friends and family to enjoy the event and, as thanks,  contribute to the GVN Foundation and their work on behalf of women and children across Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

Help those in need by enjoying the company of your favorite people.

From 2007 (its first year) to 2009, Eat So They Can raised $290,000 for the GVN Foundation's education and orphanage projects in Uganda, South Africa, Ethiopia, Kenya and Peru.

In 2010, Eat So They Can has expanded its reach and ambition.  Eat So They Can is concentrating on four themes — orphaned and vulnerable children, women's empowerment, anti-human-trafficking, and emergency relief — and aims to raise $500,000 by December 15th, 2010.

To read more about their causes or about hosting an event, click here.

To celebrate Eat So They Can, we are sponsoring a public benefeast event at The City Tavern in Union Square, NYC on December 2nd at 7pm.

Come for a complimentary drink, stay for dinner (not complimentary), but make sure to register and donate to Eat So They Can and the GVN Foundation beforehand.  Click Here.  (You can also donate to this fundraising event without attending).

Benefeast Nonprofit of the Month (September, ’10): Peruvian Hearts!

September, 2010

Spotlight On:

Ana Dodson was born in 1992 in Cuzco, Peru.  After spending the first year of her life in Peru, Ana was adopted by the Dodson family and grew up in Golden, Colorado.

In 2003, Ana and her mother visited Cuzco and the Hogar Mercedes de Jesus Molina orphanage again.  Ana brought books and toys for the girls, but upon returning to her home in the US, she couldn't let the images and feelings from her trip go.  She had to do more.

"I've always known where I come from and always loved it and valued it," said Ana.  "But when I went back, the poverty struck me so hard.  I could have been one of those children on the street or in the orphanage."

So at age 11, Ana founded Peruvian Hearts (PH) to support the Hogar orphanage and give the girls there a path to a wonderful life through nutrition, sanitation, health care, and educational scholarships.

Since 2003, PH has greatly expanded its reach.  It now runs lunch programs throughout the Sacred Valley, providing a meal and a multivitamin daily to over a thousand children.

This month, Ana is starting her freshman year at Colorado College.  But she is making sure that Peruvian Hearts doesn't miss a beat.  The organization is planning two projects for the coming months:

1. PH will build an additional bedroom at the Hogar, so they can provide a bright future for six more young girls.  The cost to build this room will be approximately $10,000, with an extra annual cost of $8,000 to provide these six girls with nutritional food, daily multivitamins, health care, and school supplies.

2. PH will also build a kitchen in Lamay, Peru, which will provide lunch to an additional 275 children.  The cost to build this kitchen will be approximately $11,000.

You can (of course!) use Benefeast to help Ana and Peruvian Hearts complete these projects.

  • To make a donation to PH, click here.

  • To attend a Public Benefeast for PH (we have sponsored dinners on Sept. 25th, 28th and 30th in NYC), click here.

  • To list Peruvian Hearts as a nonprofit you support, click here.

  • To browse or buy Bazaar items for PH, click here.

  • To sell an item on the Bazaar to benefit PH, click here.
